Exporting data

Joripo Desktop

The Windows app that keeps a copy of a workspace on your computer, syncs what is new, and makes the same exports without a connection, on a schedule if you like.

Joripo Desktop is a Windows app that keeps a copy of a workspace's forms, submissions and attachments on your computer and exports them without a connection. Its exports are the console's own: the same WIDE CSV, Stata do-file, .dta and .sav, made by the same code.

Install

Open /desktop on your server and download the installer. It installs for you only, without administrator rights, on Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit). Its window uses Microsoft's WebView2 runtime, which Windows 10 and 11 include; without it, the app opens in your default browser instead. The installer is not code-signed yet, so Windows may say Windows protected your PC: choose More info, then Run anyway.

When your server offers a newer version, Joripo Desktop says so. Install it over the old one: your settings, sign-ins, history and study folders stay. Uninstalling removes the program and its scheduled syncs, never your data.

Sign in

Owners, managers and reviewers can connect Joripo Desktop. In the app, choose Sign in with the browser and enter your server's address. Your browser opens the server's /device page: sign in as usual and confirm the code the app shows. Your password never passes through the app.

Each computer you connect is listed on Your account under Connected computers, with Revoke. Signing out in the app disconnects it on the server too; if the app cannot reach the server at that moment, it tells you to revoke it on that page.

Study folders and syncing

Each workspace you copy gets a study folder, by default Documents\Joripo\<server> - <workspace>. The data is kept there, with the exports beside it.

  • Sync downloads only what is new or changed: new and edited submissions, attachments (each checked against its SHA-256), every form version, the form's media, and the server datasets the forms use.
  • A submission removed on the server is marked on your computer, never deleted from it.
  • Export only makes the files again from the copy, with no connection.

Exports

The files are named <Form title>_WIDE.csv, import_<form ID>.do, and on request .xlsx, .dta and .sav, the long format, and an export report PDF. Attachments go to a media folder, and the CSV cells say media\<file>.

Like the server's default export, Joripo Desktop exports approved submissions only, with corrections applied; the export report says how many were left out and why. Further options, all off by default:

  • choice labels instead of the values, or both (a <field>_label column after each choice question);
  • a code for questions never shown (. or a number such as -999), while a question shown and left blank stays blank;
  • leave out calculated fields;
  • a KML file of the GPS answers, for Google Earth.

On a schedule

On a workspace's page, Run on a schedule creates a Windows scheduled task that syncs and exports every N minutes, every hour or every day, even with the app closed. It runs on battery too, and a run missed while the computer was off or asleep starts as soon as it is back.

Old SurveyCTO data

Open a SurveyCTO folder exports a SurveyCTO Desktop folder with Joripo's export engine, using the form's XLSForm if you have it, or the form definition SurveyCTO Desktop kept in the folder. The SurveyCTO folder itself is never changed.

Look after the copy

The study folder holds the workspace's data, masked as your account sees it, as ordinary files on your computer; Joripo Desktop does not encrypt them as the server does. Keep the folder on an encrypted disk (such as BitLocker) and on a computer only you use.
