Installing Joripo Collect

Where the app comes from, installing it on Android, updating it without losing anything, and how far each release has been tested.

On this page

Joripo Collect is installed from your Joripo server, not from an app store. Every server has a download page at /app, which offers the version of the app its maintainer has published there.

Install

  1. On the phone, open your server's /app page in the browser (on a computer, scan the page's QR code with the phone to open it there) and tap Download.
  2. Open the downloaded file. If Android asks, allow your browser to install unknown apps (Settings › Apps › Special access), then go back and install.
  3. Open Joripo Collect and sign in; see Signing in on Joripo Collect.

The page shows the file's size and its SHA-256 checksum, so you can check that the file you have is the one the server offers. Joripo Collect needs Android 8.0 or newer.

If the page says no version has been published yet, ask your server's maintainer: they publish the app from Server administration › Apps.

Update

Download the new version from the same page and install it over the old one. Every release is signed with the same key and installs over the one before it: forms, drafts and anything waiting to be sent stay on the phone. Never uninstall the app to update it: uninstalling deletes everything the phone holds that has not been sent.

What the app holds

The app keeps every blank form, draft and finalized form on the phone, separately for each server and each workspace, so the same form ID in two workspaces never mixes. A draft is always filled and sent on the definition it was started on. The phone's keys are sealed with Android's Keystore; the interviews themselves are in the app's private storage, protected by Android's own device encryption rather than by a key of the app's.

Not on Google Play yet

Publishing on Google Play is prepared but not done. Until it is, phones install and update from your server's /app page.

How far it has been tested

Testing status. Joripo Collect's releases are tested by an automated suite and run on the Android 15 emulator against a real server (sign-in, approval, download, filling with camera and GPS, the offline queue, sending). Release 2.0.0 was also checked on a physical phone. Later releases have been run on the emulator only; walking the current release on physical phones is the next step. Try a new release on one phone before giving it to a whole team.
